| 1965-1971 | Anthony McKinley | Butchers(?) and taxi firm |
HB05/15/019. Kevin McAfee (10/12/24). Working Group review 23/01/25. Anthony McKinley’s daughter IC (in correspondence with Frances McMichael) Anthony had previous worked “on the trains til 1962. Then they bought a new bungalow on Moyle road … He was a bread man and had his taxi business there. He bought the butcher shop on Castle st as a better stand for his taxi business but still ran the butcher shop.” Quoting her father’s autobiography, IC writes “Anthony went to America in the latter part of the 19th century, came back and opened a News’ agency and knick knack shop on Castle Street [owner 1901-1928]. Anthony never married. The shop then went to William Johnston who opened a butchery business. It was passed to his son James who then sold it to Gerard Douthart of Market Street. This was about 1963. He then sold to me, grandnephew of Anthony McKinley. I took it over on1st November 1965. I modernised the shop and sold it on to Anthony Kearney of Ballymena, formerly of Newry in 1971.” |
