According to Ciaran Campbell (27/11/23), the lease deeds for no.84 date back to 1788 and show there was a house already on the site before the present 19th century structure. |

SMcM research based on Griffith’s Valuation registers. According to Patricia Duffin (email 04/03/25) “My grandfather continued to live there. He was a well respected cattle dealer and on occasion bought cattle and sheep for Lord Glentoran who “used Clare Park for big parties”. The majority of the ground floor was a butchers shop. My grandfather died in 1951 [later email 19/06/25 corrected this to September 1946] and the shop continued for a short time after that. “His brother, Joey, owned The Boyd Arms which was just below the family home. “My Aunt sold the building in 19. to the firm of solicitors who, I believe still occupy it. Below the large front window was a marble inset with the word McAuley carved in gold letters. I believe that after the sale this was turned around to present a blank frontage.” |

Patricia Duffin (email 19/06/25) continued: We were looking at the gaps in the lease details for 84 Castle Street. Probate was granted on 29 June 1948 and I presume that the house then passed to my Grandmother Elizabeth McAuley neé Mc Donnell. She was born 20 January 1895 in West-Torr (Glenmakeeran). She died on 29 March 1970. I was given to understand the ownership then passed to her youngest child, Kathleen (Dollie) McAuley, my aunt, born 22 April 1937. I’ve been told that her brother, Paddy, was named as having some sort of watching brief to support her. I have no idea what that consisted of legally. However, he was persuaded by Kathleen to relinquish this and leave the house in her name. As he died in 1985 it must have happened before that.” |
