Background
The Stonemason’s Cottage at Ballyrory is a late Georgian\early Victorian and Pre-famine rural cottage in Ulster. It is built in the vernacular style by expert stone masons Owen Deeny and sons of Ballyrory, North Sperrins , Co Derry. The Stonemason’s Cottage at Ballyrory is the ancestral homestead of the Deeny (O’Duibhne) family in Ulster. The Deeny family were renowned stonemason’s in the North Sperrins area having been involved in the building of most of what are now heritage buildings such as churches, national schools and prestigiously the local Learmount Castle.
Objectives
Restore the Stonemason’s Cottage at Ballyrory, North Sperrins to its original state (circa 1830) making it safe and secure for viewing by the community and future generations locally, nationally and worldwide.
Collaborate with local community groups, schools, colleges and universities in the collection, recording and dissemination of oral history, culture, and stories of the people who were associated with design, construction and occupancy of the Stonemason’s Cottage.
Create a range of multimedia resources that record, present and archive the design, construction and occupancy the Stonemason’s Cottage over the centuries including all stages of the present restoration.
Act as a community resource for similar restorative built heritage projects in the Learmount parish area of the North Sperrins, advising and assisting where appropriate.
