Documentation of the Sam Henry collection is being carried out in conjunction with the community engagement aspect of the ‘Connecting with the Past, Collecting for the Future’ project, funded by Esmee Fairbairn Collection Fund.
This three year project to complete the documentation of the Sam Henry collection aims to increase access to the collection by making it fully searchable and therefore increased engagement with the local community, research projects, etc.
When the collection was donated in 2011, museum staff initially estimated that it consisted of c.11000 items. The total number of items documented so far has reached c.12200. This number will continue to increase as documentation of the collection continues.
The most recent items to be documented have been c.1000 photographs and postcards. They feature Sam, his family, local people and places. A small selection can be viewed below.
