Envelope containing three page letter from Private James Henry to his father Alex Henry of Coleraine, written from France, 30th April 1916.
Private Henry signed up with the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Derrys, as part of the 36th Division. He fought on the Western Front, dying three days before the armistice.
In the letter, Private Henry mentions conditions on the Front and the limited news they have received about the Easter Rising. "I believe there is hot times in Ireland at present there must be something bad as the letters that are coming here are all censored..."
We are grateful to Private Henry's sister, Georgina Leighton, who kept the letters safe. Courtesy George Leighton.
