Mr Billy Watton was part of the Mace
grocers’ scheme in Northern Ireland, delivering the emerging self-service
approach to shopping. This was described by the Coleraine Chronicle in 1965, when this photo was taken, as, “a dramatic revolution taking place in hundreds
of shops throughout Ireland”. The premises, at the corner of Union Street and Railway Road, were formerly known as Brewster’s. Today it is occupied by McClarty’s Insurance Services.
