Garvagh House originally dated possibly from the early 17th century but was enlarged on subsequent occassion, resulting in a Georgian appearance. The Garvagh Estate was the former seat of the Canning family who arrived during the Plantation of Ulster -the first George Canning was agent to the Ironmongers' company but the family eventually were raised to the peerage under the title Baron of Garvagh. When the family eventually sold Garvagh House, it was used as flats for single female teachers, and some classrooms. Over the years the house had suffered from neglect leading to rot and infestation. County Londonderry Education Committee decided to demolish it in the 1960s, opening Garvagh Primary School on the site in 1965
